Let's face it, we all have to make an effort to clean-up the environment. At PCSN, we believe the only way this effort can gain widespread acceptance and make a difference is if it makes the bottom-line more attractive for companies. Green initiatives do not have to be a cost center, they can be a profit centers. As a matter of fact, these initiatives will only make a difference if they are sustainable and turn a profit. We have several initiatives in place internally that minimize the impact on environment, reduce costs and at the same time streamline processes. We've implemented such initiatives at our client sites to make them more earth friendly and pad their bottom line at the same time!

PCs and Servers are seldom used to their full potential. A typical machine uses the same amount of energy whether it's running a screen saver or being used as a word processor. You can and should run multiple sessions on one machine, this lets you share the energy being used to keep the machine live between several work loads. You can have a server machine being virtualized and serving as the desktop for numerous users as opposed to each user having a dedicated machine. Similarly, you can use a small number of physical servers to give you a wide variety of virtual servers. This process not only saves resources but also lets you use your hardware resources more efficiently. You can implement centralized policy to put machines in sleep mode while not being used and turn off monitors if not being used instead of running screen savers.

At PCSN we use both Microsoft and VMWare technologies to virtual physical machines. This not only allows us to use resources more efficiently, save on energy costs but also gives us redundancy and allows for quick disaster recovery. PCSN uses virtual machines for web serving, voice services, video conferencing and virtual meeting places. We believe without this infrastructure in place, PCSN would not have been able to operate with such efficiency being a decentralized organization with on-shore, off-shore and remote users.

Another advantage to virtualization is you can dymamically migrate your computing resources between your site and a datacenter or launch more servers to share load during peak times and later scale the servers down to conserve resources as load decreases. Now, with services like Elastic Compute Cloud from companies like Amazon, you can rent servers by the minute at very nominal rates to scale up for that peak in resource usage and scale back down instead of having to purchase servers that will only be used a few months during the year.

We have streamlined processes that historically take up lot of resources. We've got rid of paper, now that we have, we can quickly and easily find information that previously required going through heaps of paper documents. Since information is now stored electronically, it is easy to search, takes up less physical space and we can set rules to archive information for required lengths of time and securely dispose of information at the end of life.

Since information is in electronic form, this allows users to have access anywhere from any device and at the same time makes it easy for administrators to set policies on which user should have access to what type of information. This also enables admins to see who accessed information at what times. This ties in to the fact that PCSN does not require anyone to come into a central office to work, all users can work from where they are and techs and engineers can be dispatched straight from their residence to client sites. This process allows for the quick turn around times we have come to be known for and at the same time makes us more nimble and profitable; a win, win, win situation.
