Protecting Your Intellectual Property Running a small business requires upper management to play several roles simultaneously. You have the role of strategizing on company direction, security, and most importantly you need to make sure that the company culture protects your Intellectual Property (IP). There are several avenues you need to consider when your IP is concerned. There is always the external threat, but an often overlooked threat is the internal threat. Of-course you trust your employees and users, yes you made the correct hiring decision but can you really afford to take the chance? You have several ways to make sure you know what users are doing on your network. One excellent way to monitor user activity is to use one of the many activity monitoring software. Such software will run you about $1000 for licensing of about 25 machines but you can imagine the security and peace of mind you will have that your IP is not being drained via removable disks, IM or third party email. Such software has another advantage, the proof of employee's activity leading to termination or monitoring employee productivity draining activities. Nadeem Azhar 1/16/2007
