New Threat Causing a Stir Normally I try to ignore talking to customers about threats in the wild, because there are so many. I was hoping I could do the same with the worm Conficker but with the amount of communications we've had from our clients, it is apparent almost everyone has heard of this threat. Firstly, if all your machines are signed up with one of our proactive plans then you don't have to worry about. Secondly, the Conficker C worm spreads via RPC ports through a known vulnerability in one of the Windows services. What this means is if your firewall blocks RPC traffic then even if you are not up to date on Windows Updates, the worm won't be able to infect over RPC. And, all our clients with firewalls have RPC traffic blocked at the firewall. So, there is no need to panic! As far as your home machines are concerned, make sure your antivirus software is up to date and make sure your OS is up to date as well. To check your OS simply click Start, Programs, Windows Updates and apply any critical updates available. By the way, this should be standard procedure, you should always have your antivirus up to date and your PC's should be set to automatically install critical security updates released by Microsoft. If you are so inclined, you can read more about this threat here. If you find that you cannot run Windows Updates and your antivirus software got disabled by itself then contact us either via email support@pcsn.net, phone 281-880-0738x2 or via Livechat www.pcsn.net.
