Resource Virtualization I've touched the subject of virtualization several times; How creating multiple virtual servers in a physical server reduces costs and optimizes resource usage. I've also talked about free and not so free products from different vendors. Let's say you see the cost savings and benefits of virtualization, like most companies. Next step is to convert some of your existing servers from old physical hardware to new hardware in a virtual machine. If you've heard of Window PE (pre boot environment) then you probably already know that it's not easy to get your hands on. No problem, the next best thing is free software called Bart PE. Bart PE comes with several different plugins for different tasks. One plugin that comes in real handy to convert physical servers to virtual is Ultimate-P2V. This software combined with BartPE and Ghost can create a simple process for you to convert your physical server to virtual. You can get BartPE for free from here to build you boot CD. You can get Ultimate-P2V from here. Now all you need to do is get a freeware "Ghost" like application or purchase a standalone license for Symantec Ghost. I have most of our applications running in virtual environments, it aids in disaster recovery, keeps physical server sprawl to a minimum and lets me use most of our hardware to it's full potential while setting different performance parameters for different virtual machines based roles. One thing that doesn't work very well in a virtual machine is Microsoft Exchange, but that is not something you would want to virtualize anyway due to its heavy resource usage.
