Although it is of little dispute that the iPhone has taken the industry by a storm, some do ponder what is driving this trend. I used to be a die hard Windows Mobile fan, the flexibility it gave me, to be able to make the device do anything I wanted, was of great value to me.

One day I was in the car with a colleague and I needed to reset a system via web browser that required a radio button to be unchecked, then checked. I was unable to do this from my Windows Mobile handheld! The web site was showing in such small text that even with the stylus I couldn't check the box. So, knowing that iPhone lets you zoom in, I borrowed my friends iPhone and got the job done in a few minutes. It was the revolutionary interface that allowed me to do this, something simple that no one else thought about or bothered to implement.

That was the turning point for me. That's when I realized the interface is really very user friendly and can make a difference in a do or die situation when you don't have access to a computer. Now I have an iPhone, all our staff members do. And, we are able to take remote control of other machines, connect to our main phone system to make landline calls, use our corporate IM system, basically anything we can do on a PC.

Yes, most of the things we can do on iPhone, we can do on Windows Mobile as well, but most things take much less time to accomplish on the iphone. Another big plus is, most Windows Mobile based devices use a very inadequate (slow) CPU, while iPhone has a much faster CPU and this is probably the reason an iPhone batter won't last as long but I religiously plugin in handheld every night anyway. It wasn't until iPhone came on the scene that Windows Mobile manufacturers started using faster CPUs. One thing Windows Mobile absolutely cannot do, is run an airplane simulation from x-plane. You can download a demo for free and improve your flight control skills using the iPhone as a stalk since it can detect motion. Just one of the things to show you not only how powerful the iPhone is but also how well the accelerometer works.

You can get a free demo for X-Plane Mobile from here.
