Infrastructure Deployment In this business I encounter companies almost on a daily basis that are about to pull the trigger on major infrastructure deployment. They have done their homework as far as references, etc are concerned for the IT provider, but most of the time, they've missed an important aspect of deployment; Does the IT provider understand their business. There's instances when a company is opening up a new office and they've already decided on whom they are going to use for IT services and they contact us just to get a second opinion. Most times we find out that basic questions remain unanswered or were never asked like, how many incoming phone lines the office will have, what is the expected number of concurrent calls in a day, what type of internet access will be in place, what bandwidth will be available, will users need to use their office phones remotely, etc. It almost seems like the IT provider was in a hurry to provide an estimate and really did not do an assessment, now the client asks us to provide a similar quote. If an IT company has the experience, they usually spot estimates that are not specific, showing no assessment was done and the estimate creator did not know the user requirements. Remember, without doing an assessment, no one will know what you need. If someone talks to you over the phone for 10 minutes and sends you an estimate, it shouldn't excite you but rather raise a red flag. I know most of you think this is common sense, but I see this kind of stuff happening very often and end up having to explain to decision makers why we cannot just send an estimate without an assessment. When you are investing in IT, you are investing for the long term, don't be hasty. Nadeem Azhar 10/19/2007
